MAKINEN Finland maintains its CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Performance Ladder Standard 3rd level Certificate  after the annual audit conducted by DNV in November. The audit verifies that MAKINEN is capable of achieving specified objectives and meeting the requirements outlined in the standard. MAKINEN passed the audit without any nonconformities and demonstrated the effectiveness of its management system.

“Our corporate culture is based on a strong interest in the continuous development of business operations and the desire to act as an industry pioneer. Obtaining the certificate as the first company in Finland and among the first globally supports these ambitions of being the industry forerunner”, Jaakko Makikalli, CEO of MAKINEN, says.

“Social responsibility and sustainable development form the core of our business. The health, safety, and well-being of our employees, subcontractors, and partners are an essential part of our social responsibility. The CSR certificate has increased awareness and understanding of the importance of social responsibility and sustainable development among the company’s personnel. It has brought social responsibility actions into everyday activities through various development projects and programs. We are committed to continuously promoting and developing our operating methods in a sustainable and responsible manner.”

In late 2021, MAKINEN became the first organization in Finland to receive the DNV-certified sustainability management system certificate. It was also the first accredited sustainability certificate issued to a company operating in the global shipbuilding industry. After the renewal, MAKINEN continues to be the only organization in Finland awarded with this certificate.

As a part of its Sustainability Program, MAKINEN initiated a partnership with Reforest to calculate the carbon footprint for Jan 1, 2021 – Dec 31, 2021. This is the first time the company to measure its CO2 emissions.

MAKINEN 2021 Carbon Footprint Scopes 1, 2 and 3.

The calculation of the greenhouse gas emissions and the carbon footprint follows the guidelines and standards of the GHG protocol. The functional scoping of the calculation is based on emissions caused by activities under the company’s control, i.e., emissions the company can impact through its operations.

The greenhouse gas emissions generated are classified into Scope 1 (direct emissions), Scope 2 (indirect emissions), and Scope 3 (other indirect emissions) under the GHG Protocol. Scope 2 carbon footprint is 0 because the electrical energy purchased by our company is 100 % renewable. Scope 3 emissions occur in the company’s value chain and can be included in the calculation on a case-by-case basis.

The results were used as a base to prepare a carbon roadmap with an action plan. Using the calculation results, the company can develop its operations in an even lower emission direction in the future. The figures for 2021 will be used as a comparison year in future calculations.

Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.

“Our main target is to be carbon-neutral by 2028, within GHG protocol Scope 1 and 2. However, Scope 3 – the value chain emissions from business travel, logistics, and transportation – generate a significant share of the total emissions”, says Kirsi Orava, VP, Sustainability at MAKINEN. “To lower the carbon footprint of these activities, we need to work closely with our customers, suppliers, and subcontractors for local sourcing of materials and workforce. The key factor here is the early planning of projects: when we have enough time to plan the material and workforce flow, we can reduce unnecessary travel, transportation, and cargo. We look forward to a future where the shipbuilding operations’ carbon footprint is also discussed and considered in all phases of project planning and execution.”

This is the third consecutive Sustainability Report for MAKINEN highlighting the company’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives, achieved milestones, and ongoing development work. The reporting period is the company’s fiscal year, July 2021 – June 2022, and the report follows the GRI Reporting standards for sustainability reporting

Kirsi Orava, VP, Sustainability, what would you like to tell us about the latest report?

“During the reporting period, MAKINEN’s sustainability program has taken a giant leap forward, and we have achieved many of our ESG goals. The HSE development has made significant progress: Employees are our most valuable asset, and people’s well-being is our top priority. Sustainability work can be seen everywhere within our company, and employee engagement is high. This year, we also did the carbon footprint calculation according to GHG for the first time in the company’s history. Also, in the fall of 2021, MAKINEN Finland was the first organization in Finland to receive a DNV-certified Sustainability Management System certificate, CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Performance Ladder Standard 3rd Level certificate. This is the first accredited sustainability certificate awarded to a company in the global shipbuilding industry.

With this report, we want to tell stakeholders/customers, suppliers, and subcontractors where we are on the path of Sustainability development and what our goals are in the coming years.”

What sustainability trends have you noted in the previous years?

“In the cruise ship industry, the focus has mainly been on reducing carbon dioxide emissions and sourcing more sustainable fuels. It is delightful that an evident change has taken place in the last couple of years, and environmental responsibility has also emerged in the maritime interiors sector. As a turnkey supplier of interior refurbishment projects, MAKINEN has an important role in this, and we continue supporting our clients and designers in selecting sustainable materials and solutions.”

What are MAKINEN’s key goals for the next reporting period and upcoming years?

“Small and medium-sized enterprises, like us, have limited resources for developing sustainability. Therefore, prioritization and keeping a clear focus are essential. MAKINEN’s key targets in the coming years are: further enhancing our offering of sustainable materials and solutions, reducing the carbon footprint in GHG Standard Scope 3, increasing employee well-being, and developing a sustainable supply chain. By involving and encouraging our supply chain to act, we can have a bigger impact in creating a more sustainable future.”
